Manipur Chief Minister Biren N Singh has clarified that he is not resigning from his post, putting an end to rumors that circulated throughout the day. Thousands of demonstrators had earlier blocked the Chief Minister’s convoy from reaching Raj Bhavan.

Eventually, the Chief Minister informed the women demonstrators that he was not resigning. He also tweeted to reiterate his decision, stating that he will not be stepping down from the post of Chief Minister.

Women leaders defused the situation by assuring the crowd that Singh was not resigning. Reports suggested that the Chief Minister had prepared a resignation letter but was persuaded by his supporters to tear it up. However, the Chief Minister’s office did not respond to queries on the issue.

The situation escalated earlier in the day when hundreds of youth and women protested in front of the CM’s residence, demanding that he should not resign. There were strong rumors in Imphal regarding his potential resignation after renewed violence in the state claimed three lives and left five others injured on Thursday.

The toll in the exchange of fire between security forces and suspected rioters in Kangpokpi district rose to three on Friday. Armed rioters had opened unprovoked firing at Haraothel village, and the security forces responded to tackle the situation.

The ongoing ethnic violence between Meitei and Kuki communities in the northeastern state has resulted in more than 100 fatalities so far.
