The company is the first to charge for UPI-based transactions. This service is provided free of cost by its competitors. On mobile recharges above Rs. 50, the digital payment app has begun charging processing fees ranging from Rs. 1 to Rs. 2 per transaction. Users of PhonePe will be charged Rs. 1 for recharges between Rs. 50 and Rs. 100, and Rs. 2 for recharges more than Rs. 100.
In a statement, PhonePe said, “On recharges, we are running a very small-scale experiment where a few users are paying for mobile recharges.” Recharges of less than Rs. 50 are not charged, recharges of between Rs. 50 and Rs. 100 are charged Rs. 1, and recharges of more than Rs. 100 are charged Rs. 2. Essentially, the most of users are either not paying anything or paying Re 1 as part of the trial.”
